WINGS OVER HOUSTON AND HOUSTON GREEK FESTIVAL PROVIDE ENTERTAINMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR HOUSTONIANS
Those in the Houston area this weekend have no excuse not to get out of the house. A bevy of opportunities exist for those looking to get a little sunshine, some great food, and historical entertainment.
Let’s start with the Houston Greek Festival, which takes place Thursday through Sunday. Tickets for the festival are available on a walk-up basis at the gate and are $5 for adults and children under 12 are admitted free. The festival is appropriately located at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 3511 Yoakum.
Keep in mind; this is no festival-come-lately. The Houston Greek Festival has been around for 41 years and actually goes by the name: Original Greek Festival.
As one might guess, food is the focus of the event. Many of the culinary preparations for the festival commence months in advance of the start date. Among the traditional dishes offered are spanikopita (spinach pie), tiropita (cheese pie), and baklava.
The Houston Greek Festival comes on the coat tails of the 51st annual Greek Food Festival of Dallas and if attendance in Dallas is any indication, the Houston Greek Festival could see record numbers.
If your quest for entertainment seeks something a little more adrenaline inducing, the Wings Over Houston Airshow has you covered. The 23rd installment of this event is being held October 6th and 7th at Ellington Field.
Because this event is sponsored by NASA there are a great variety of attractions. For example, revelers can try on an imitation space suit, participate in trivia contests, and converse with people working in the space program. NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik will be on hand to meet attendees and sign autographs.
This year, the airshow features many specialty aircraft including the supersonic T-38 two-engine jet trainer, the Super Guppy (a giant Boeing 377), the Boeing C-9, and the F-18 Hornet.
Additionally, the Wings Over Houston Airshow will feature members of the 147th Fighter Wing. This group has protected the skies above the United States for over nine decades. You can also catch a ride in some vintage aircraft at the show. Check out full details and prices for rides in an array of WW II fighters and bombers.
Very cool: You can buy and print tickets for the Houston air show from the official air show site or pick them up from Houston area Kroger stores.
For those who want their adrenaline rush a little more “hands-on,” native Texan and entrepreneur Ron Sturgeon, runs several businesses that may be food for the speed junky’s soul.
For example, Sturgeon’s DFW Elite Auto Rental allows customers to rent exclusive luxury and exotic cars for a special weekend, 40th birthday or any occasion. Anything from a vintage 65 Corvette rental for a class reunion in Houston to an Aston Martin convertible for an elegant event out. To find agencies specializing in exotic car rental in a city near you, you might consider using an online directory specializing in exotic car rental companies such as http://www.rentexoticcars.net.
Sturgeon’s DFW Elite Car Club offers membership opportunities to exotic car buffs who want access to some of the finest automobiles in the world (more than 40 elite autos at the time of this writing) without having to put up with the burdens of maintenance or absorb the cost of depreciation that goes with owning most exotic and luxury cars.
“Exotic cars, like the aircraft at the Houston 23rd Annual Airshow, are depreciating assets for the people who own them. Oftentimes it makes more sense to experience them without ever taking title,” said Sturgeon.
Additionally, DFW Elite Car Club membership gives its members the chance to mingle with other automobile lovers in exclusive car themed events. Many of the largest cities in the United States now have exotic car sharing clubs. For more on how they work, check out an article on the top car sharing clubs in the nation from the Robb Report Collection.
Houstonians looking for more automotive themed fun might enjoy a Drive Your Dream Tour. Participants experience five exotic cars on some of Houston’s most scenic roadways. Similar full day driving experience tours are also available in New York/New Jersey from Gotham Dream Cars and in the Windy City from Chicago Exotic Car Rentals.
