At first blush, the idea of purchasing a vacuum cleaner for Christmas seems incredibly irresponsible.  This is especially true for a man buying holiday gifts for the woman in his life.  The old punch line about buying the significant other a blender is even trumped by the notion of buying her a vacuum.
