As a teenager in the 1980s, I have fond memories of the film that established Michael J Fox as a star and gave me my first big screen view of the DeLorean: Back to the Future.
DeLorean’s gullwing doors, futuristic styling and stainless steal skin so attracted movie producers that it was cast as a time machine in the highest grossing film of 1985.
Twenty two years later, the car still has legions of fans although the last of the original DeLoreans rolled off the carmaker’s Northern Ireland production line in 1982.
Now it’s time for a sequel. The Houston firm that owns the parts, drawings, and trademarks from the DMC is planning to build about 20 per year from scratch. The story is according to an article in the Los Angeles Times. The Houston based owner, James Espey, can land you behind the wheel of a fully restored exotic DeLorean for about 42k according to the writeup.
Although the DeLorean isn’t an exotic car as far as performance, I have always been a fan of the styling and would love the chance to sneak a drive in one of the soon-to-be minted quicksilver DeLoreans. Tell me a Delorean wouldn’t be a cool prom or wedding exotic car rental in Houston!
Thanks to Martin Zimmerman of the Times for a great story.
