Audi to take on the supercars

Sunday, 29 July 2007
BY JOE TONER

Audi is no longer considered the great pretender, having successfully elbowed its way into the Teutonic premium brand club that was previously the preserve of Mercedes and BMW.  Now Audi has decided to raise the stakes even higher and announced entry into the supercar club competing head on not only with BMW and Mercedes but also Porsche, Aston Martin, and Ferrari.  The new car, known as the R8, is a mid-engined, aluminium bodied, two seater coupé, powered by a 4.2 litre V8 engine producing 420bhp.  The mid-engined layout is often favoured by supercars because it helps to create a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution between the front and rear axles, giving good balance and control in extreme conditions.  Allied to the now legendary Quattro 4 wheel drive system the car should have almost fool-proof handling.
Audi views the car as a road-going version of its very successful R8 race car which has had considerable success in recent years racing at the Le Mans circuit.  While this is Audi’s first foray into the supercar market, a lot of the mechanicals are tried and tested.  The engine has already seen service in the RS4 and the six-speed transmission, either manual or the R Tronic semi automatic, has seen service in the Lamborghini Gallardo.  Audi’s ownership of Lamborghini has given its engineers access to the skill and expertise of the Italian automaker in the R8’s development.  The cars share only 15 per cent of their componentry and they are differentiated by their individual styling, interior, and engines.  While enjoying access to the Italians Audi is being careful to maintain its reputation for reliability, something that Italian supercars have never been renowned for.
The car certainly has the looks to turn heads and in this sector of the market that’s half the battle.  It will be almost hand built at a rate of no more than 20 cars in a day and annual production limited to 3,000 units.  On the road the car will accelerate from 0 – 100km/h in 4.6 seconds and top out at 301km/h.  Even before this car has seen Irish roads there are rumours of a more powerful variant using a 5.2litre 570bhp V10.  This has already seen service in the Audi S8 and in different tune in the Gallardo.  If Audi can transfer the build quality and reliability of its mainstream models to the supercar arena then it will be a hard car to bypass.  Though, for some, no matter how good the product the lure of the the Ferrari or Porsche badge may be just too hard to resist.
Audi Ireland is releasing the car through three dealers in Ireland, Frank Hogan in Limerick, Sheehy Motors in Naas, and Park Motors in Dublin.  If you want one you know where to go!

Do Product Placement Deals in Movies Pay Dividends for Luxury and Exotic Car Makers?

I have to admit that I have wasted hours watching movies this summer. It’s my wife’s first full year as a teacher and, well, she is making the most of having summers off by making sure that I see my share of summer flicks.

It’s been fun to watch for auto company product placements in this summer’s flicks.

I’ve blogged previously about GM and the Transformers movie, so it was with some interest I read an article by Karl Greenberg in Media Post Daily about Ford’s new deal with BET and Miramax to put their luxury and sports cars in upcoming movies.

The deal goes beyond product placement and actually allows Ford to get their products written in and to have more control over how their products fit into the story.

I suppose somehow these branding/placement campaigns translate into sales, but I’m not really inclined to go buy a Ford Fusion because it made it into Evan Almighty or Man of the Year starring Robin Williams. At least not at a level I think about.

Do you think these product placement and creative deals are really worth the money that automakers pay for them?

Would you be more likely to buy a Shelby Mustang because you saw one in Will Smith’s upcoming “I am Legend”?

Model T Spanks Hummer H2 in a Hill Climb

Sometimes an elegantly simple solution beats all the fancy in the world. Forbes Magazine got to enter an H2 in a hill climb against a bunch of vintage autos. Shouldn’t have been a fair fight.

Cool post by Chris Tudor at Autoblog tells the story:

http://www.autoblog.com/category/hummer/

Not exactly the PR the folks at Hummer were hoping for, but it shouldn’t dampen anyone’s spirits as far as renting a Hummer in San Antonio for the weekend or any of the other great cities served by DFW Elite Auto Rental.com

The hillclimb happened in Evansville, Ind. and the driver was Gary Le Fever, a spry 70 year old.

To be fair the Model T wasn’t entirely factory original.

Catch the August 13 story in Forbes about the Hummer and Model T showdown.

Sixty Years of the VW Camper

Alright you who make up the Old Farts club remember the days when this little beauty hit the scene. What memories these the “Bulli” bring back. GizMag wrote the best article giving some really cool background info on how one mans vision extended from a panel truck and became the VW camper known as the “Bulli”.

Well historical and memory lane buffs here’s your chance to see hundreds of these jewels in one place. Grab your peace sign necklaces and love beads dress in your paisley shirts bell bottoms and head to Hanover’s Hermesplatz for a long over due exhibition of memory invoking rides. Get what the big daddy o’s at VW has to say about the vehicle and the event.

“Scarcely any other vehicle evokes as many emotions as the VW Bulli. Back then it stood for new departures, economic success, independence as well as fun and travel. It is pleasant, reliable and a real cult vehicle. We want to establish the unrivalled legacy of our brand with the international VW Camper event and hope to revive the Bulli brand in the future” explains Stephan Schaller, spokesman for Brand Management, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Right on Daddy O! Heck my 16 year old told me she wants a Bulli to be her first vehicle. Coincident or not I’ll never know. Catch the whole article it is great reading two thumbs up!

Porsche’s New Cayenne Hybrid

Porsche unveils its hybrid SUV prototype that can get up to 26 miles a gallon and may be on sale by end of the decade

Porsche this week demonstrated a Cayenne SUV hybrid prototype, providing a glimpse of what the company will offer to consumers by the end of the decade. The Cayenne Hybrid features a full-hybrid design where the hybrid module (clutch and electric motor) is positioned between the combustion engine and the transmission. The design will improve acceleration and engine flexibility compared to a conventional Cayenne and Porsche is targeting average fuel consumption figures of 9.8 liters/100 kilometers in the New European Driving Cycle and about 24 miles per gallon in the US FTP cycle for the Cayenne Hybrid, and hopes future developments may allow it to push towards a consumption figure of 8.9 liters/kilometer (approximately 26 miles per gallon).

Coordinating the car’s three main components — the combustion engine, the electric motor and the battery — is the Hybrid Manager, the heart of the Cayenne Hybrid. The Hybrid Manager, which oversees some 20,000 data parameters as compared to only 6,000 data parameters for a conventional engine, is one of the most powerful technologies found in any hybrid vehicle.

Other unique features of the Cayenne Hybrid designed to decrease fuel consumption include the power steering and vacuum pump for the brakes, as well as the air conditioning, which operate on electric power. Technical components, such as the oil pump in the Cayenne’s automatic transmission, have been replaced by electrically powered units. The Cayenne Hybrid’s electro-hydraulic steering — a first for a vehicle of its kind, will ensure the Cayenne Hybrid drives like a Porsche with predictable and safe handling characteristics and the agility that is expected of a Porsche SUV.

Porsche plans to introduce similar hybrid technology in a version of its Panamera four-door Gran Turismo. The Panamera will debut in 2009, with a hybrid to follow.

Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), based in Atlanta, Ga., and its subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., are the exclusive importers of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne sport utility vehicles for the United States and Canada. A wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, PCNA employs approximately 300 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, service, marketing and training for its 213 U.S. and Canadian dealers. They, in turn, provide Porsche owners with best-in-class service.

Orange Texas Native Wins Best in Show For Sweet Pontiac GTO

Hats off to Ambrose Claybar and his classic gray 1965 Pontiac GTO. He showed the car at the 28th Annual GTO Association of America International Meet in late June.

Competing against 307 other cars in Worthington, OH, he and his restored Pontiac GTO walked away with “Best of Show”. According to an excellent article by Erik Onstott of the Orange Leader, Ambrose also won Concourse Best of Show – besting a field of 65 GTOs.

Check out the full story of this award winning classic car from down Houston way:

http://www.orangeleader.com/news/local_story_209222245.html

A neat tidbit on the show car: it has 34 options (tilt steering, AM/FM stereo, and 389 cubic inch V8 with three two-barrel carburetors…) and saw its first service as a company car for a Houston Pontiac executive.

Nice photo of the classic American muscle car:

Way to go, Ambrose!

Entrepreneur and Confirmed Car Guy John Jett Shows Prized Cuda at Michigan’s Premier Classic Car Show on August 5th

Ok, so today is my day to show some love to American muscle cars and the folks that restore and show them. Just trying to balance out all the love for European exotic cars that usually fills the exotic car rental blog.

Writer Chris Williams has a gem of a story about Michigan Pizza entrepreneur and lifelong gearhead John Jett.

John Jett will be showing off his 1970 Plymouth Cuda at the 29th Annual Meadowbrook Coucours d’ Elegance in Rochester on August 5th.

The car is in pristine condition and is one of the few radio delete Cuda’s ever produced by Chrysler according to the article.

A sharp photo of classic car and owner also by Mr. Williams:

Audi R8 Spider

Now I’m really excited!! Wow! A can be made topless Audi R8. This one has my vote.
Audi R8 Spider

Audi R8 Spider: the lowdown

Car Magazine states:

This drawing reveals the R8 targa for the first time, with twin speedster humps incorporating breathing vents for the mid-engined V8 behind the two-seater cockpit. The doors are deeply scalloped, as on the coupe, but this time there’s a shortened, stumpier aluminium-look blade just ahead of the rear wheels. Tone down the cartoony feel of this sketch (just look at the liquorice-wrapped, deeply dished alloys) and this is the final production car.

This picture confirms CAR Magazine’s scoop (October 2006) that the R8 will have removable targa panels, rather than a space-gobbling removable fabric roof or folding hard-top.Audi might be SHOWIN OUT now.
