They’ve managed to build a Formula 3 race car that runs on chocolate. “The dark chocolate is way better than milk chocolate as a fuel. But you have to be really careful not to accidentally use Hershey with almonds,” said a source close to the project.

“We had mishap with Hershey with almonds that ruined the fuel injection system on the racer and set us back several months,” stated the eco-racer’s design chief. Damn the interns.

According to the U.K. Sun, the car has a steering wheel made of carrot fibers, a body made of potatoes and seat foam made of soybeans. Supposedly, it’s very healthy to drive. The chocolate exhaust fumes are not only carbon neutral but they also leave a deliciously tasty scent behind. The car can do 145 miles per hour and the developers would like to see their eco-friendly car and some of its technologies adopted by leading racing teams such as Ferrari and McLaren. I think they might have better luck looking for sponsors at Droste or Mars or Hershey or even Haagen-Dasz.

The Lamborghini that captured my imagination as a youngster was the Countach and I certainly would have worked a lot harder in school if a ride in a Lamborghini Countach was hanging in the balance.

What we think of as “the Autobahn” is actually a 12,200 kilometer network of freeways in Germany, many of which of which have a posted recommended speed of 130 kilometers per hour (81 miles per hour).  However, these roads are famous for not having a blanket speed limit.

Being able to drive a Lamborghini on these German highways is a dream for many people.  With a top speed of over 300 kilometers per hour, this car could easily quadruple the posted speed limit on many US freeways.

The autobahn network has some speed limits.  Road junctions, construction areas, and other dangerous spots have a posted speed limit.  Also, temporary speed limits are imposed when weather conditions make high speeds unsafe.  When this happens, monitors above the road display the temporary limit.

Even when there isn’t a general speed limit, the autobahn roadways are not without rules.  The “Rechtsfarghebot” rule requires motorists to use the left lane only for passing other drivers.  Unless they plan to pass, drivers are expected to remain in the right lane.

The autobahn construction was actually officially begun during the 1920s and 1930s.  The autobahns are considered the first limited-access, high-speed network of roads.  Many of the autobahns were originally paved during World War II to help provide secret airports in tunnels and nearby woods.

However, the autobahns were not used extensively as roadways until the 1950s when most of the roads were repaired.  Some sections of the autobahns were not repaired until after the German reunification in 1990.

Since many of us cannot really realize out dream of driving a Lamborghini on the Autobahn, we can at least make the Lamborghini part a reality.  There are several options for exotic car fans, including renting a Lamborghini or joining an exotic car sharing club.

Another option is to participate in an automotive dream tour.  Those who participate in dream tours get to drive five high-performance cars in a single day.  The cars total about 2,000 horsepower.  One of these cars in a Lamborghini Gallardo.

That’s where Neil Young and the Progressive Automotive X Prize come in.  Young and partner Jonathan Goodwin, a mechanic from Wichita, Kansas, are working to convert a 1959 Lincoln Continental to electric power.

So far, Young has invested about $120,000 in converting the car, and he expects the project to cost about $250,000 total.  The team tested the vehicle last spring.

“She was awesome,” Young told the Associated Press. “Her acceleration was incredible, she moved with hardly a sound; it was so quiet we could hear the wind through the tags of other cars.”

The Progressive Automotive X Prize, which Young and Goodwin plan to enter, is a race to develop a production-ready automobile capable of getting at least 100 miles per gallon.  More than 60 teams will participate in the cross-country race, which will take place this year and in 2010.

Goodwin and Young call the car the “Linc Volt.”  At two and a half tons, it’s not a lightweight vehicle, but it is fully electric.  Goodwin hopes to use the same technology to convert the type of vehicles Americans love to drive.

“If you take that same technology,” he told The Wichita Eagle, “and you stream it down into something that’s more modern, or a large SUV, the capabilities are a guarantee there.”

There’s no denying that we love to drive cars that are powerful.  There are few people who wouldn’t jump at the chance to drive a Lamborghini or get behind the wheel of a Bentley.  If Neil Young and the X Prize have anything to do with it, we won’t have to sacrifice power to achieve good fuel economy.

In the meantime, a lot of people are switching to exotic car sharing clubs, rather than shelling out the money to buy an exotic vehicle.  Exotic car clubs give members access to an entire garage of exotic vehicles, and they can still drive a fuel-efficient car for their daily commute.  Until automakers produce an electric car that’s fun to drive, car clubs are a good option.

Young told the Associated Press that creating an electric car and participating in the X Prize is part of his personal mission.

“You know, I thought long ago you could change the world by writing songs,” he said.  “But you can’t change the world by writing songs. Oh, you can inspire a few people, get some of them to change their thinking about something. But you can’t change the world by writing songs. But we could change it with this car.”

The term is hypermiling.
 
A little research enlightened me to the fact that hypermiling is the practice of incorporating extreme automobile driving techniques in order to get more MPG out of the old family battle wagon.
 
These hypermiling techniques are not just gimmicky; they can be effective.  For example, putting your car in neutral and coasting downhill, drafting closely behind other cars on the highway, and gentle acceleration can all add up to a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency.  Since nowadays a 30% increase in fuel economy can prevent your having to get a second mortgage…hypermiling is hot!

Although this is all fine and good, I must admit that when I first saw the term “hypermiling” I instantly thought of breaking the sound barrier in a 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo.  Imagine my surprise when I found out the real meaning of the word.

 
Armed with this knowledge, I had to contact my friend Ron Sturgeon to get his thoughts. Sturgeon is the author of Green Weenies and Due Diligence, a book that catalogs the meanings of some of the more colorful phrases in use in America’s boardrooms.

“Hypermiling sounds like it should mean driving really fast,” said the author and owner of a DFW exotic car rental company.

Good, I’m not crazy.
 
This just demonstrated that people’s perception of the meaning of words depends in part on their backgrounds.  I’m sure that if you start talking about hypermiling at an Al Gore rally, the eco-conscious crowd will instantly chip in with their own tales of high-mpg driving in their Priuses.

Hang around with Sturgeon and his friends and mention hypermiling and you may get an earful about the latest V12 or the new 2008 Viper SRT-10 that just arrived at his Tarrant County exotic car club.  Sturgeon is also apt to start making suggestions for exotic car rentals in Dallas TX that he can set you up with to increase your hypermiling experience.
 
Whatever you think of hypermiling, just make sure you don’t show up to Gore’s Earth Day rally in Sturgeon’s Ferrari 360 Spider rental because the lack of fuel efficiency may not be “green” enough to earn you “cool” status and that would be bad.
